Immortality wasn’t the gift most people might have thought it was, at least not Jack’s brand of immortality. It wasn’t that he couldn’t die, he just didn’t stay dead, which was a very different thing, especially when he frequently returned to life before his body was done healing.
Dying was bad enough; even when it happened quickly, it wasn’t without pain or suffering. Resurrecting while he still had a massive hole in him, or broken bones, or missing body parts, had to be excruciating, but still Jack would throw himself into danger without a second thought, even knowing it would quite likely cost him his life.
Ianto knew Jack was just trying to protect his team, along with any innocent bystanders, and that was certainly noble of him, but on many occasions his sacrifice simply wasn’t necessary.
Whether Jack had a hero complex, a death wish, or no sense of self-worth whatsoever was something Ianto still couldn’t figure out. What he did know was that Jack was his own worst enemy. If he just stopped to think things through, he wouldn’t die so often.
That was why Ianto had made it his mission in life to protect Jack from himself.
