New York is the city that never sleeps, and yet right now it’s so quiet and still, Ryo can almost imagine the entire metropolis is deserted, abandoned, not another living soul in existence. It’s a little eerie, but mostly wonderful; the previous night’s heavy snowfall muffles what little sound there is, and the air, though icy cold, tastes fresh and sweet.
Roads are almost deserted, the parked cars lining the streets little more than mounds of whiteness. Schools are closed, anyone whose job isn’t considered essential has been told to stay home, and even the birds are silent. They have no reason to sing in such harsh conditions; all their energy has to go into staying warm and finding food.
As for Ryo himself… Well, he still has to work; as a cop, he can’t just hunker down at home where it’s warm, no matter what the weather’s like, and he honestly doesn’t mind. He has on thermal underwear, plenty of layers, and good, sturdy, fleece-lined boots to protect himself from the cold, and trudging through eighteen inches of snow really gets the blood pumping.
Winter has a beauty all its own, and today he’s spending his commute appreciating it.
The End
