“One day off!” Dee complained. “One measly day, and then we’ll be back to the everyday grind, workin’ ‘til we drop.”
Ryo sighed; he’d heard it all before. “You know the precinct’s short-handed right now, Dee. A lot of people are off sick, so those of us still fit to work need to take up the slack. It’s not like the criminals are gonna give up their life of crime until everyone’s back at work.”
“I know that! Doesn’t mean I gotta like it. If gettin’ the flu vaccine was compulsory for cops, maybe we wouldn’t haveta go through this every goddamn year. We end up workin’ longer hours for weeks on end just ‘cause we’re sensible!”
“We get paid for the extra time.”
“Not enough to make up for losin’ half of our days off.”
“There’s not much point in our having any time off if all you’re going to do is keep complaining.” If Ryo sounded exasperated, he figured it was fully justified; Dee hadn’t stopped moaning since they’d left work two hours ago.
“Whaddaya mean?”
“I mean we’ve only got tonight and tomorrow off, and you’re wasting it on complaining when we could be doing something fun.”
