Ryo was an excellent driver; like Dee, he’d taken all the police advanced driving courses, and passed with high marks, because in a profession where car chases were always a possibility, knowing how to handle a car at high speeds, especially in traffic, was essential.
He loved cars, and enjoyed driving, but sometimes it was pleasant not to be the one behind the wheel. At work, he and Dee alternated days in the driving seat, which was only fair; being work partners meant sharing all the responsibilities of their job, even if Ryo still did more of the paperwork than Dee.
Outside work, when they went on dates, more often than not they used public transport so they didn’t have the hassle of trying to find somewhere to park, and they could both drink if they wanted to. But on trips like this, Ryo much preferred being the passenger.
Lounging comfortably in his seat, his legs stretched out, sleeves rolled up and the window down, he rested his forearm in the open window as he gazed out at the world passing by, enjoying the warm breeze that ruffled his hair.
Dee glanced across at him briefly and grinned. “Make the most of it while you can, babe. It’ll be your turn to drive before you know it.”
“I know, but by then we’ll be on the freeway instead of the backroads, and there won’t be as much to see.”
“So that’s why you let me drive first!” Dee laughed. “Sneaky.”
“Why not? You never seem all that interested in the scenery.”
“Trees and fields are fine, but they all look pretty much the same to me, and we’re only passin’ through. Way I see it, the only scenery worth watchin’ on a long drive is what’s sittin’ right beside me.”
