“How can you stand being down here?” Gwen asked. “Especially on your own. It’s so quiet, so… eerie, with all the strange noises from the pipes, and the ventilation whispering like that.”
“The ventilation isn’t running at the moment,” Ianto said calmly. “Causes too much of a draught when I’m sorting and digitising the old paperwork, so I turn it off. I’ll switch it back on when I leave.”
“If it’s not the ventilation, then where’s the whispering coming from?” Gwen looked around nervously.
“Oh, that’s probably the archive monsters sneaking about. They can be completely silent when they want to be, but they usually make a small amount of noise, just so I know they’re around.”
“There’re monsters down here?” Gwen’s eyes went comically wide.
“Technically they’re aliens, I just call them archive monsters because I don’t have a better name for them. They’ve been down here since Victorian times, according to Jack, but no one’s ever caught more than a glimpse of them. They don’t bother us, so we don’t bother them.”
“And they’re here now?”
“Possibly. Or it could just be ghosts.”
“Ghosts?” Gwen squeaked. “I’m off!” and she fled.
Jack appeared. “Finally! Thought she’d never leave.”
