“You look like you’re carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders,” Rhi said, sipping tea as she stared across the kitchen table at her younger brother.
Ianto grimaced. “Yes, well, being the only adult at work will do that.”
“What’ve they been up to now?”
“Oh, the usual. Owen and Gwen got into a fight over who should have the last lemon slice in the packet Tosh asked me to get, and when I say fight, I mean the kind little kids have, complete with hair pulling. Jack took the opportunity to eat the cake himself, so then Gwen and Owen turned on him, and Gwen managed to rip his shirt sleeve half off. Don’t ask me how. That’s why I’m here. I left them to sort themselves out.”
“Well, since you’re here, you might as well come to Mica’s Sports Day. She’d be thrilled to have her uncle there.”
So that was how Ianto Jones found himself not only taking part in the egg and spoon race, but winning, much to his niece’s delight.
“You’re so clever, Uncle Ianto!” she praised.
“I’d forgotten how much fun this could be!” Ianto felt better than he had all day.
