“Like we need more rain,” Dee grumbled, looking out the window to find it was pouring yet again. “Wouldn’t be so bad if we didn’t haveta go out in it. Stayin’ home and snugglin’ under the covers is the best way of spendin’ a rainy day, but we’re just a couple of workin’ stiffs who need to get paid, so we gotta show willin’, even when we’re not.”
“It could be worse,” Ryo pointed out. “At least we’re in court today, so once we get there, we’ll be fine. It’s better than having to be out on the streets, canvassing for witnesses or chasing suspects.”
Well, that turned out to be a case of famous last words.
“You had to say that this mornin’, didn’t ya?” Dee stood dripping beside his partner outside the courtroom they’d been in, evacuated along with everyone else. Turned out that a friend of the accused had come up with the brilliant idea of starting a fire in the courtroom, thereby creating a diversion so his buddy could escape. Instead, all he’d succeeded in doing was setting off the sprinklers and getting everyone drenched.
Ryo sighed. “How was I to know it would rain indoors?”
