A/N: Triple drabble.
He’d told Dee he wanted to do this, and he hadn’t been lying; he really did want to give mountain climbing a try, just to say he’d done it. But now that Ryo was right here, staring up at what seemed to be a sheer cliff face, it was a daunting prospect.
Despite being long-sighted, he couldn’t detect anything that could serve as a hand- or foothold. Might as well try climbing the blank face of a weathered brownstone, where the surface of the old bricks crumbled beneath your fingers. The thought reminded him uncomfortably of the time he’d clung to the edge of a tenement roof by his fingertips, knowing if he lost his precarious grip, he’d fall to his death…
He pulled his mind back to the present; it was no good thinking about that now. This was a totally different situation, he’d be with experienced climbers who knew every inch of this rockface, and he’d be wearing a safety harness. Even if he slipped, he wouldn’t fall, there was nothing for him to be afraid of, and he wasn’t afraid, as such. Nervous, yes, but not afraid. It was just that now he was faced with what he’d be climbing, he couldn’t see how it would even be possible.
Ryo liked to be prepared for anything life could throw at him, but how could he prepare for something he had no experience of?
He smiled suddenly. Maybe that was exactly what he wanted from this experience, to throw himself in at the deep end, with no experience and minimal preparation on his part other than bracing himself for whatever might happen. He wouldn’t be in control here; he was putting himself entirely in the hands of the other climbers. He was ready. It was gonna be amazing!
