Entering Dee’s apartment, Ryo paused just inside and frowned, feeling a touch of déjà vu. Of course, last time he’d walked in on something like this, Dee was sick with a bad cold, or possibly flu, and had collapsed when he’d finally made it home after spending most of the day trying to reunite a lost child with her mother.
This was a little different. For one thing, this time Dee was face up instead of face down, but still…
“Dee, why are you lying on the floor?” Ryo was sure his partner must have a good reason for his peculiar behaviour, even if he couldn’t imagine what that might be.
“I put my back out takin’ those bags of rubble down to the dumpster. Thought lyin’ flat for a bit might do some good.”
“Oh. Why didn’t you ask me to help clear up?” Knocking the two apartments into one had generated quite a lot of brick shards and plaster, which Dee had bagged up and left on the landing.
“Wasn’t your job. I made the mess, so I figured it was up to me to clean up.”
“Funny you don’t feel that way when it comes to paperwork,” Ryo teased. “So, is it helping?”
“Huh?” Dee looked confused.
“Lying on your back.”
“Oh, that. Uh, not really. That’s why I called ya.”
Now it was Ryo’s turn to be confused. “You called me because your back hurts and lying on the floor hasn’t helped?”
“No, I called ya because I got down here, and now I can’t get back up.”
“So you’re stuck.”
“Just a bit. I thought if you could maybe roll me onto my front, I might be able to get up.”
“You’re in luck, I’ve done this before.” Levering Dee into a sitting position, Ryo hauled him to his feet. Dee groaned through gritted teeth but didn’t protest as his lover set him upright. Then, before he could do more than take a breath, Ryo grabbed him under the arms, and practically lifted him off his feet.
“OW!” The pain was gone as suddenly as it started, and Dee blinked. “Hey, my back feels okay! What did you do?”
Ryo grinned. “My karate instructor was also a chiropractor. He taught me that trick one day when he put his back out during class.”
Dee shook his head. “You never cease to amaze me. Thanks, babe.”
