“How can you possibly have any kind of work-life balance if you live together as well as working together?” Ryo had once been asked.
He’d thought it an odd question; work and his personal life were inextricable, woven together so completely that any thought of separating them was inconceivable.
“We’re detectives, our work is a major part of our lives. While we do our best to leave work behind at the precinct when our shifts end, that’s not always possible. We can’t just put all thought of the cases we’re working on out of our heads the moment we clock off. Ideas for alternative avenues of investigation can pop up wherever we happen to be, and while we sometimes jot them down to be considered later, usually we’ll discuss them as soon as they come to mind. Living together makes that a whole lot simpler, more efficient.”
That wasn’t to say he and Dee were incapable of setting work aside and making time to do things they enjoyed, either together or apart. It was simply that when work intruded on their home lives, which it inevitably did for anyone working in law enforcement, they were able to focus on it, deal with it, and set it aside without causing undue disruption.
Ryo liked that he and his lover could go home and talk about anything that was bothering them at work without having to censor themselves. It was a lot less stressful than living with people who didn’t understand the pressures of the job and trying to hide things from them.
Honesty and trust were important in any relationship. He and Dee could trust each other completely because they shared everything, good and bad. They were always there to offer each other support; that was all the balance they needed.
