“Never mind, Drakey,” JJ consoled his depressed partner, who’d just been dumped for the second time in the space of a month. “I didn’t want to say anything before, but she wasn’t good enough for you.” He patted Drake’s shoulder. “You can do a lot better, so chin up and keep smiling. There are plenty more fish in the sea.”
“That may be true, but I’m useless at catching them.” Drake sighed. “What’s wrong with me, JJ? Why can’t I hold on to a girlfriend?”
“There’s nothing wrong with you, Drakey, don’t think like that! You’ve just had some bad luck; all of the girls you’ve met recently have been too shallow to appreciate what a great guy you are, and that’s not your fault. It could happen to anyone.”
“I really thought she liked me.”
“Some people just aren’t cut out for dating cops; they expect more than we have to give. Our job is too much a part of who we are, and they don’t understand that it takes priority over everything else. If Elaine can’t handle the irregular hours, and everything else we deal with, you’re better off without her.”
“Maybe I should try dating a cop.”
