The problem with taking vacations to tourist hotspots was that the beaches were always crowded. Everywhere you looked, there’d be people sunbathing, playing beach volleyball, kids shouting and running around… Finding an area of vacant sand big enough to spread your towel was practically impossible; all the best spots would already be taken.
That was part of the reason Dee and Ryo were here instead of vacationing in Florida, or California, or some other place where hot, sunny weather was practically guaranteed. England was no tropical island paradise, and some of the beaches were more pebbles than sand, but away from the resort towns it was possible to find an out of the way beach they didn’t need to share with anyone.
They’d taken the coast road out of town that morning and driven until they’d found a stretch of beach that wasn’t too stony. Parking on the rough grass that bordered the road, they’d taken their beach gear and a cooler stocked with food and soft drinks, and picking a spot within view of their rental car, had settled in to enjoy the warm sunshine.
“Now this is what bein’ a tourist is all about,” Dee said, relaxing on his towel, clad only in his trunks. “Gettin’ off the beaten track and seein’ the places everyone else overlooks.”
Beside him, Ryo gazed along the windswept expanse of coastline, a slight smile curving his lips. “It’s beautiful out here. I don’t understand why people always make for the closest stretch of beach and then spend all their time grumbling about how crowded it is.”
“Laziness. Not that we should be complainin’, not when we get all this to ourselves.” Dee made a sweeping gesture with one arm, encompassing their surroundings. “We can do whatever we want here without botherin’ anyone.”
