For so long Ryo had felt as though he was caught between a rock and a hard place, an uncomfortable situation no matter how he looked at it. He hadn’t wanted to damage the friendship he and Dee had developed through working so closely together, or risk destroying their working relationship, which was equally important to him. They made an effective team, balancing each other out, and it seemed unlikely either of them would find anything comparable to that synergy with a different partner.

It had been like walking a tightrope, keeping Dee at a distance without pushing him away, and it had been exhausting, at least in part because he’d been constantly resisting the temptation his partner represented. What if, by accepting Dee’s advances, he destroyed everything they already had? What if things didn’t work out between them and he lost the man who was both his work partner and his best friend?

On the other hand, would their friendship, and their partnership, survive if he kept rejecting Dee? Would his partner eventually get tired of trying and move on to someone else, while everything they’d built together crumbled away to nothing?

It had seemed that no matter what he did, he risked losing the most important person in his life, and because he couldn’t bear thinking about that, he’d found himself stuck, hovering uncertainly somewhere in the middle, unable to decide on the best course of action, or inaction, as the case might be. Should he say yes to Dee, or tell his partner he just wanted to be friends?

All through that time, at the back of his mind had been something he’d once heard, or maybe read, although he couldn’t recall where. That the worst regrets anyone could have weren’t about the things they’d done but about the missed opportunities, the chances never taken. Between that and some good advice from a friend, Ryo had finally managed to silence his doubts and fears long enough to take the plunge…

So now, here he was caught between a rock and a soft place, Dee’s hard, masculine body, and his own soft mattress. Despite being slightly squished, because Dee was both taller and heavier, it wasn’t unpleasant. His partner, his lover, was warm and reassuringly solid, anchoring Ryo to the bed so he couldn’t float away…

They’d been lovers for less than a month, and already Ryo could scarcely remember why he’d been so worried about this. To be honest, right at that moment he could hardly form any thoughts at all, but that was mostly because Dee was kissing him, and that never failed to make his brain stop working. It made his legs go weak too, but that was fine since he was already lying down. Dee wouldn’t let him fall. He’d never felt safer, more secure.

“You okay?”

“Huh?” Dark eyes blinked drowsily.

“D’ya want me to move? I don’t wanna squash ya.”

“I’m fine.” Ryo smiled lazily up at the man he loved. “You might have to pull me out of the mattress later, but that’s not worth worrying about right now. This is good.”

“Well, if you’re sure.”

“I am. Feel like I could stay right here, just like this, forever.”

“Tempting.” Dee grinned and leaned in for another long, slow kiss. “Not very practical though,” he added, drawing back a little. “Eventually we’re gonna get hungry, then one of us might haveta go in search of food, and we’re supposed to be workin’ tomorrow. ‘Course, we could always call in sick. Think I can just about reach my phone without movin’ too much.”

Ryo sighed. “Better not, we could get in trouble if the Chief finds out, and anyway, it wouldn’t be fair to whoever had to cover for us.”

“Yeah, I guess you’re right, but we still got the rest of today and all night to do whatever we want. I’ve got a few ideas.”

“I’m sure you do.” There was a mile long list of chores Ryo knew he should be getting on with, and yet somehow they didn’t seem important. Maybe it wouldn’t hurt to leave them just this once; they’d still be there tomorrow. For now, he was perfectly happy right where he was.
