Cops existed to protect the public and catch criminals, which was supposed to be a good thing, but as anyone in law enforcement soon found out, that didn’t mean people liked them. Even law-abiding citizens got cagey if the police showed up on their doorstep.
In some respects, Ryo couldn’t blame them; not all cops were as honest as they should be, and they were seldom the bearers of good news. Nobody wanted to be accused of, or arrested for, a crime they didn’t commit, just as no one wanted to be told something terrible had happened to a loved one, so the suspicious and wary expressions on the faces of residents when they answered their doors were understandable. Receiving a warm welcome was almost unheard of.
Usually, they got the opposite.
“How many times have we had a door slammed in our faces today?” Dee asked, staring at the scarred block of wood just inches from his nose. It was still reverberating in its frame, but Dee hadn’t so much as flinched. “I’ve lost count. Was that seven or eight?”
“Nine,” Ryo replied. “And seven residents either aren’t home or just aren’t answering their doors at all. Guess no one’s feeling like helping the police today.”
“Two people were shot dead practically on their doorstep last night. In their place, not sure I’d wanna answer the door either.”
“I’m surprised so many have.” Ryo started towards the next apartment and Dee trailed after him.
“Most of ‘em only do it so they can slam it again, show us what they think of us.”
“They tell us we’re not doing enough to keep the streets safe, but they could help us do our jobs better if they told us what they know.”
“Like most folks, they don’t wanna get involved.”
