A/N: Triple drabble.
It was late; the campfire they’d cooked their dinner over was now hardly more than embers and ashes. A quarter moon was rising somewhere behind the trees. Dee lay comfortably with his head in Ryo’s lap, staring up at a night sky filled with more stars than he’d ever seen above the city.
“D’you think we’ll ever colonise other planets?” he murmured. “Humans, I mean, not us personally.”
Ryo chuckled. “You ask the damnedest questions sometimes.”
“I think about stuff.” Dee tipped his head back to look up at his lover’s face. “You didn’t answer my question. And don’t go on about radiation in space makin’ it impossible. If we ever figure out how to build interstellar craft, I guarantee we’ll already have problems like that licked.”
“Okay, then… Not anytime soon, but if we don’t manage to destroy the planet and make ourselves extinct in the process, then I think we’ll have to figure out a way. The rate the population keeps increasing, this one little planet of ours won’t support us forever.”
“Mm,” Dee agreed. “I sometimes wonder if maybe we didn’t evolve here. I know the evolutionary evidence says we did, but what if our ancestors came from somewhere out there, maybe crash-landed on earth around the time dinosaurs became extinct? We could be the descendants of a way more advanced civilisation and not even know it.”
“That’s some imagination you’ve got.” Ryo leaned down to kiss his partner. He loved moments like this, when Dee was so relaxed, his mind wandering at random. “I guess anything’s possible, but we’ll never know for sure. Not unless someone invents time travel, which seems less likely than colonising other worlds.”
“Would you want to visit another planet if you could?”
Ryo smiled. “Only if we could go there together.”
