If there's anyone Jack would listen to, it would be the Doctor. Maybe Jack will finally be able to let go of the guilt and forgive himself now.

The doctor is right. Jack was just a child himself at the time. His father should never have fobbed off the responsibility of protecting Gray onto Jack. THAT was unforgivable. HE was the adult, their father, their protector. He failed abysmally in that role and brought unimaginable heartache to the whole family as a result.

And he got himself killed into the bargain. If he'd stayed with his children they would probably all have survived, but he ran off in search of their mother. It just never made sense - abandon two children who are under attack to go looking for another adult...

Hopefully Jack will take the Doctor's words to heart and forgive himself. He wasn't to blame.

Thank you!

Exactly! If he'd lived, do you think Jack's mom would have thanked him for abandoning their two young children and coming to save her, when she was safe inside their house? Somehow I doubt it. How many loving fathers are going to say, "To hell with the children! They can fend for themselves. My wife is more important."? Really??

I can only think that whoever wrote the episode didn't have children. I mean, I don't have children, but if it was a choice between protecting children and protecting an adult I'd put the kids' safety first.

If they had to have Jack letting go of Gray's hand, then their father shouldn't have been there in the first place. They could have been alone on the becach, both terrified and trying to get to safety. Same thing, but without the irresponsible parent. Or there could have been a third, younger child that their dad was carrying while trying to keep the other two together... So many ways they could have done it. But no, poor young Jack ends up blaming himself when he shouldn't have been put in that position in the first place. *curses writers and pokes them with a pointy stick*
