With a look of intense concentration on his face, and using a pair of tweezers, Dee carefully poked each seed into the little hole he’d made for it in the seed tray, filling each one in as he went. It was fiddly, but he was determined to follow the instructions on the packet and do the best job he could. Besides, it would be worth all the effort in a few months when he and Ryo were picking fresh tomatoes off the vine every day.
Last year, when they’d set up the roof garden, they’d bought young tomato plants to grow on, but this year he’d thought it would be fun to grow everything from seed, especially now they had the heated greenhouse to start things off in.
“How’s it going?” Ryo asked, entering the greenhouse and leaning over Dee’s shoulder.
“It’s kinda tricky making sure I only get one seed in each hole, but I’m managin’. See?”
Ryo bit his lip; he shouldn’t laugh, Dee was trying so hard, but… “There is an easier way, you know.”
“There is?”
“Half-fill the tray, scatter the seeds on the surface, then cover them.”
Dee frowned. “Why didn’t I think of that?”
