“Good thing we both know cars inside out,” Dee said from under the hood of their piece of crap unmarked cop car.
“That’s only an advantage if it’s something we can fix without needing to replace anything,” Ryo reminded his partner as he slammed the trunk. “There’s not so much as a basic set of tools back there. Just the jack and a spare tyre. Which is flat, by the way.”
“Damn! What does the motor pool even do to deserve their pay?”
“Search me. Any idea what the problem is?” Ryo joined his partner investigating the cause of their breakdown.
“Terminal rust? It’s a miracle this thing runs at all. I thought all the NYPD’s vehicles were supposed to be maintained in good order, but lookin’ at this makes me wonder how long it’s been since anyone so much as popped the hood. Gonna be havin’ words with whoever’s responsible for this mess, assumin’ we can get it runnin’ well enough to drive back to the precinct.” Dee was still poking around in the engine as he talked. “Hello, looks like we got a loose connection.”
“Huh.” Ryo leaned over his partner’s shoulder to see. “Can you tighten it?”
“Not with my bare hands.”
“Stay with the car. There’s a hardware store a couple of blocks back; I’ll run down there and get a pair of pliers. Anything else?”
“Yeah, electrical tape, an adjustable wrench, and a flathead screwdriver.” Dee glanced up with a grin. “Just in case somethin’ else gives out on our way back.”
Ryo snorted. “Know what we should do?”
“What?”
“Make up a basic car repair kit, take it with us in whatever vehicle we’re assigned. That way, when we break down, we won’t have to mess about.”
“Good idea. We’ll charge it to expenses.”
