There’d been a time, before his dad was killed, before he’d come to live with Ryo, when Bikky would have given in to every temptation that crossed his path. No money for a candy bar, or a comic book? Well then, he’d just help himself. If anyone noticed, he was small and could run fast; they’d never catch him.
If people didn’t want their bicycle wheels stolen, they shouldn’t leave them unattended, and anyone stupid enough to leave their purse open with their wallet in full view at the top was just asking to have it snatched.
For a while after Ryo took him in, Bikky had carried on the same way, indulging in petty theft and vandalism, stealing hubcaps and other random items just because they were there, testing his abilities. But then he’d been caught, and Ryo had come down on him hard.
The thing about Ryo though, he didn’t just punish Bikky and make him give things back, or pay for them, if they’d already been used or eaten. He sat Bikky down and explained to him why what he’d done was wrong, and he always looked so disappointed. That was the worst part, knowing that he’d somehow let his foster father down. It made Bikky feel awful.
The temptations were still there, everywhere he looked, but all Bikky had to do was think about how Ryo would react if he took something that didn’t belong to him, and that made it easy to resist.
So when he saw a kid snatch the wallet from some lady’s bag as she sat outside a café, having lunch, he gave chase, caught the thief, marched him back to return what he’d stolen, and turned down the reward he was offered.
“My dad’s a cop. I just did what’s right.”
