“What did you do then, Detective?” the defence attorney asked.
“We flollowed the sspect…” Before Ryo could say anything else, he was interrupted by the ominous clearing of a throat.
“Detective Maclean, are you drunk in my courtroom?” The judge leaned towards the witness box, a disapproving expression on her face.
“No, Y’ Honor!” Despite being totally innocent of any wrongdoing, Ryo couldn’t keep from blushing.
“You were slurring your words. The whole court heard. Explain yourself.”
“I apologise. I ‘adn’t espected to be testifyin’ today, but I got a call at lunch t’ say the trial ‘ad been brought forward, only, I was at t’ dentis’ mos’ of the mornin’ havin’ a crown fitted an’ everything’s still numb.”
“Ah, I see.” There was a flicker of sympathy on Judge Moran’s stern face. “Well, in that case, speak slowly and as clearly as you can manage.”
“Yes, Y’ Honor.”
“As for you…” The judge turned her attention to the defence attorney. “I suggest you keep your questions brief and to the point, and show some patience. Detective Maclean is doing the best he can under what must be very trying circumstances.”
The defence attorney didn’t look happy. “Yes, Your Honor.”
