Walking into Dee’s apartment and finding the main room lit by two dozen tealights, their small flames flickering merrily, Ryo frowned; something wasn’t right here.
“Why the candles; is the power out? No, it can’t be. I just came up in the elevator; if the power was out, that wouldn’t have been working. Or did it just come back on?” Using all his considerable detecting skills, Ryo tried to fathom the reason behind the candlelight.
Dee shook his head. “The power’s fine, babe. Which is a bit of a miracle considerin’ the weather we’ve been havin’ lately.” Storms had been causing power outages in some parts of the city, but so far not where Dee lived.
“Right, of course. If you were having trouble with the power, you wouldn’t be cooking. It smells good.”
“Thanks. It’s nothin’ fancy, just that pasta dish you taught me to make, but I think I’ve done a pretty good job with it.”
“If it tastes as good as it smells…” Ryo trailed off, still pondering the lack of electric light. “Don’t tell me the bulb blew and you didn’t have a spare.”
“That’s a you thing, not a me thing,” Dee reminded his lover. “I buy lightbulbs in bulk ‘cause the orphanage always needs ‘em. All the time I’ve been livin’ alone, I’ve never run out.”
“Then why are you using candles when you don’t have to?” Ryo was honestly baffled, and Dee couldn’t keep from laughing at the bewildered expression on his lover’s face.
“It’s called bein’ romantic,” he explained, grinning. “Have you forgotten what day it is?”
“Um, Tuesday?”
If anything, that made Dee laugh even harder. It was a couple of minutes before he could speak again. “Babe, I love ya like crazy, but there’re times you’re such a dope I gotta wonder how ya managed to survive this long. This is the one-year anniversary of the night you first told me you love me.”
“It is?” Ryo looked at his partner, eyes wide with surprise.
“Yep! Why’d ya think I invited ya over tonight?”
“Well, I thought maybe to go over our notes on the Martinez case. We’re testifying in less than a week. Either that, or you were hoping to get laid.” Ryo blushed.
“I’m always hopin’ to get laid, whatever else might be goin’ on, but I wanted to surprise ya.”
“Safe to say I’m surprised,” Ryo admitted.
