Recovering from injury was boring. Ryo was glad to be out of the hospital, but he was still seriously hampered. The doctor had told him to stay off his injured leg as much as possible for the time being, because even with the cast and crutches, putting weight on it for long periods wasn’t a good idea. That meant doing his regular chores was out of the question. He couldn’t clean, and he couldn’t do laundry, lugging it up and down the four flights of stairs to the basement laundry room and back.

He could just about cook simple meals, if he sat on a chair or perched on the tall stool in the kitchen, and he could shower, with Dee’s willing assistance, and the cast covered to keep it dry. But that still left him at a loose end for most of the day, and he was going to be off work for at least a couple of weeks yet, partly on doctor’s orders, and partly because the elevator at the precinct was out of order so he couldn’t get to the squad room.

Daytime TV was tedious, and reading, while usually enjoyable, was what had kept him going while he was stuck in the hospital. He needed something else to keep him busy and his mind occupied, so he went online to see what he could find.

A couple of days later, Dee came in from work, laden with takeout for dinner, to find his lover on the sofa, feet up, and totally engrossed in something.

“What’cha doin’?”

Ryo almost stabbed himself in the finger; good thing the needle was blunt.

“Dee! What’re you doing here so early?”

“It’s not early, babe, I’m almost an hour late. Sorry ‘bout that.” Dee had opted to stay at Ryo’s place to help out until his lover was back on his feet.

“It’s fine.” Ryo glanced at his watch. “I had no idea it was so late; the day’s flown past, I’ve been so busy.” He held something up. “It arrived this morning.”

“What is it?” Dee ambled over, setting their dinner on the coffee table.

“I needed something to do so I thought I’d try my hand at cross-stitch. The back’s a bit messy, but the front looks okay. What d’you think?”

Dee grinned. “Babe, I’m all for anything that keeps ya happy. Always knew you were crafty,” he teased.
