“You can’t be serious! There’s no way in Hell I’m partnering with JJ!” Dee stated, horrified at the very thought. “I’d rather scoop my own eyeballs out with a spoon than work with him for an hour, never mind the best part of a week!”
“Your objection is noted,” Commissioner Rose drawled, smirking lazily. Dee longed to punch that smug look off his superior’s face, but it wouldn’t be a good career move.
“Pair me up with Drake, Ted, or Marty while Ryo’s away. Hell, I’d even take the new kid, might teach him a thing or two, just anyone but my frickin’ stalker!”
“You work with whoever you’re assigned, Laytner, you don’t get to pick and choose. Besides, Detective Adams specifically requested the opportunity to work with you.”
“So he gets to choose but I don’t, is that it? I have seniority over him, I’ve been here longer; if anyone should get to choose who they work with it should be me. Y’know what, I’ll make things easier for ya, take a few personal days until Ryo gets back.”
“Request denied, and if you keep pushing, I might even make the partnership permanent. I’m sure Adams wouldn’t object. Of course, you could always request permanent assignment to another precinct. I might even grant that.”
“This is because Ryo chose me over you, isn’t it? You can’t stand that I got somethin’ you couldn’t. There’re some things that’ll always be beyond your reach, no matter how much money and power you’ve got, and Ryo’s right at the top of that list. How’d ya like it if he decided to report ya for sexual harassment? He chose not to before, but that could still change.”
“Are you threatening me?”
“Just statin’ facts.”
Rose glared at Dee. “Fine. You’re working with O’Neil.”
