“Don’t get me wrong,” Dee said. “I got nothin’ against CDs, they’re a great idea, and way better than the old cassette tapes for in-car entertainment. Easier to store, less fiddly to play, they got a lot goin’ for them. But there’s somethin’ about records just can’t be beat. Listenin’ to a record, havin’ to flip it over to play the other side, all the crackles and hisses from the needle… Some things just sound better on vinyl. Next best thing to hearin’ the music played live.”

Four surround sound speakers connected to Dee’s turntable and amplifier filled their spacious living room with the music of one of Dee’s favourite rock bands, and Ryo certainly wasn’t complaining. For one thing, the music was a lot more appealing than what Bikky used to have blaring out of his CD player, and while the volume was quite loud, Dee respected his neighbours enough not to overdo it.

“It does sound pretty good,” he agreed. “Makes me wonder what happened to my old records. I never had as many as you’ve got.” Ryo gestured at the records slotted into the bottom section of their media storage unit. “But I had a couple of record cases that were mostly full. They must still be in storage with the rest of my parents’ stuff.”

“Next time we have a couple days off, we should drive out to the storage place, see if we can find ‘em. Who knows, you might have somethin’ rare and collectible.”

The End
