Being in a relationship with Dee was amazing on so many levels, but it wasn’t without its difficulties, the main one being that he now had to divide his time and attention three ways, between his job, his foster son, and his lover. Some days he felt like there wasn’t enough of him to go around.
Work was unavoidable; he had responsibilities, and he needed the money his job brought in to pay the rent and put food on the table. Even if that hadn’t been the case, being a cop was important to him. He was doing his part to make New York safer for the boy he was raising, as well as for all the other kids and their parents. He was never going to give less than his best.
But the two most important people in his life also needed his attention, and if he was honest, he needed theirs. He loved being a dad, watching Bikky grow and flourish under his care. It was incredibly rewarding to help shape a young life, especially one that had gotten off to such a rough start, losing his mom and then his dad far too soon.
Dee hadn’t had an easy start to life either. Despite having Mother and Jess to care for him, he could still be needy. It was understandable for him to want Ryo all to himself at times, just as it was understandable that Bikky needed the same.
Sometimes it was Ryo who wanted alone time with his partner. Relationships took work, and both he and Dee had needs. It was all very well pencilling in time for them after Bikky was in bed, but knowing the boy was asleep in the next room was… unsettling.
It might have been easier for Ryo if Bikky and Dee could have gotten along better, but they were too alike, and sometimes seemed to treat Ryo himself like a prize to be fought over.
Ryo loved them both equally, just in different ways, but trying to find a balance that kept everyone happy was harder than it sounded.
