Stepping into Ryo’s apartment, Dee’s nose was immediately assaulted by the delicious aromas emanating from his lover’s kitchen. Even if he hadn’t already been hungry, the rich scent of Ryo’s beef stew would have been enough to set his mouth watering. As it was, his stomach cramped painfully, growling loudly to let him know it wanted to be fed as soon as possible.

Kicking off his shoes and hanging his jacket on one of the wall hooks, Dee did his best to restrain himself, sauntering into the kitchen as casually as he could manage. Not that Ryo would be fooled for a heartbeat, he knew his partner’s appetite, but it would be bad manners to charge in demanding to be fed. Ryo got enough of that from Bikky.

“Man, that smells good, babe!”

Ryo grinned, pushing damp hair back from his forehead. It was hot in the kitchen with no window. “I’d say I hope you brought your appetite, but I know you never go anywhere without it,” he teased.

“Damn straight, I could eat a horse.” Dee paused and frowned. “Okay, maybe not a horse, eatin’ Mr Ed would just be WAY wrong, but I could eat a cow.” He grinned, shrugging. “Or whatever it is you’ve cooked up.”

“You’re in luck, there’s definitely beef involved, along with veggies, mashed potatoes, and a raspberry cheesecake for dessert. Oh, and homemade bread rolls, just in case you need something to fill in the gaps.”

“You spoil me. Anythin’ you need me to do?”

“Well, if you’re offering, you could set the table. It’s just the two of us tonight.”

“Seriously? Where’s the kid, you send him back for a refund?”

“Dee!” Ryo admonished, laughing. “No, he’s over at Carol’s. It’s her nineteenth birthday on Wednesday so her aunt’s throwing her an early birthday party.”

“Where’s the time gone? She was a scrawny kid when we first met her, and now she’s practically an adult.” Dee washed his hands at the kitchen sink before getting out cutlery and the good table mats.

“Kids grow up. We’ve gotten older too.”

Noticing there was a bottle of red wine open on the worktop, Dee fetched two wine glasses from the wall cabinet, half filling them and setting them and the bottle on the table.

“Yeah, but like a good wine we just get better with age.” He winked, then his stomach rumbled again, and he grinned sheepishly at his lover. “So, are we gonna eat soon, or should I snag one of the dinner rolls to tide me over?”

“I can dish up right now if you’re ready.”

“Babe, when it comes to your cookin’ I’m always ready to eat.”

“I’ve noticed.” Setting a large dish of mashed potatoes on the table beside the bread rolls, Ryo returned to the oven and got the stew out, ladling generous portions onto two plates and bringing them to the table as well. “There’s more stew if you want it, I’m not rationing you. Help yourself to the potatoes. Just remember to leave some room for dessert.”

Dee slid into his seat, leaning forward to breathe in the heavenly aroma rising from his plate. “Mmmmm,” he sighed as he scooped potatoes onto his plate where they’d soak up some of the gravy. Picking up his knife and fork, he took his first mouthful of steaming stew and fluffy potatoes, closing his eyes in bliss. It tasted even better than it smelled.

As far as Dee was concerned, aside from the man himself nothing in the world beat Ryo’s home cooking. Let the rest of the world eat fancy meals at overpriced restaurants if they wanted; the stuck-up chefs in those places couldn’t hold a candle to Ryo Maclean.
