Slumped at his desk, plowing through what seemed like a never-ending pile of paperwork, Dee sighed. He hated being stuck on desk duty, but while his leg was healing well from the bullet wound the mad bomber John Hale had inflicted, he was in no shape to be chasing criminals. For one thing, his crutches would get in the way. In a couple of weeks maybe he’d be able to manage with a cane, but for now he still needed to keep from putting too much weight on his injured leg.

What he really wanted was a coffee, and not the swill congealing in the squad room’s coffee pot, but that would mean hobbling to the elevator, then out of the precinct, across the parking lot, and down the street to the coffee shop. It would take him longer than the time allotted for a coffee break just to get there.

Just as he was gloomily accepting that he’d have to wait until lunchtime, subsisting on water from the cooler, a hand reached over his shoulder and a takeaway coffee cup was set down on his desk. Dee blinked at it, then looked up as Ryo sat down across him.

"Thanks, bud, I was just thinkin’ I needed a coffee; you must’a read my mind! You sure you’re not psychic or somethin’?”

Ryo chuckled. “Hardly, but I don’t need to be. I know you. You can’t survive without your coffee and it’s not like you can go and get your own. Besides, you’d do the same for me if I was the one hobbling around on crutches.”

“I owe ya one.”

“I’ll add it to your tab, and I’ll pick us both up something for lunch later.”

“When I’m mobile again, gonna buy ya lunch every day for a week!”

The End
