“Everything alright, Dee?” Ryo frowned at his partner, who was looking unexpectedly grumpy.
“Yeah, sure, I’m just in the doghouse with the Chief again.” Dee slumped back in his seat with an exasperated sigh.
“Oh. What did you do this time?” It was a simple enough question, or it seemed that way to Ryo, but it drew a scowl from his partner.
“Whaddaya mean, ‘this time’? Thought I could at least count on you to be on my side.”
“I am, but if he’s mad at you, he must have a reason.”
“He doesn’t need one; he hates me.”
“That’s not true, Dee!”
“He says I’m lazy, I don’t follow orders, and I’m way behind with my paperwork, but I handed everything in last night! Okay, so it was a few days late, but I put it on his desk ‘cause he wasn’t there when I left!”
“Where exactly did you put it?”
“Right in the middle of his blotter, where he couldn’t miss it! Only he claims there was nothin’ on his desk this mornin’.”
Ryo sighed. “I think I know what happened. The new civilian clerk is a bit over-zealous. Probably already filed everything before the Chief arrived.”
