Everyone who knew JJ was aware that he was a dedicated follower of fashion. Dee had joked once that as a baby, JJ had probably worn designer diapers. When the time came for the new season’s colors and styles to be revealed, the two-seven’s snappiest dresser would head out to his favourite men’s wear retailers, armed with his credit cards, to make sure that his outfits would once again be right on the cutting edge.

“What do you think?” he asked, coming into the squad room looking like he was auditioning for a photo shoot in a glossy magazine. The casual slacks, sweater, and sports jacket were from the fall line of one of New York’s top designers and must have cost JJ a fortune. Not that he cared; his family was wealthy, he got a monthly allowance from the trust fund his grandparents had set up for him when he was born, and the only reason he worked at all was because he loved being a cop. It was all he’d ever wanted to be.

Everyone turned to look at him.

“You look great, JJ. Very smart.” That was Drake of course, always admiring how well-turned-out his work partner was, while he himself looked like something the cat had dragged in, chewed up, and spat out.

“The colors really suit you, JJ.” Ryo smiled at the smaller man, happy for him.

Dee snorted. “You’re a detective, you’re not supposed to go around lookin’ like a fashion model. Plainclothes, idiot, we’re supposed to blend in, not stand out in a crowd. Anyone gunnin’ for a cop wouldn’t be able to miss ya, and what happens when your fancy outfit gets ruined? This is a dirty job.”

If JJ was hurt by Dee’s words, he didn’t show it. “If anything gets ruined I’ll just replace it,” he said, his smile undimmed. “I just want to look nice for you.”

“Look nice for yourself if ya have to; I don’t want ya doin’ anything for me.” Dee turned back to his work.

"You don’t mean that. You should let me take you to my favourite boutique; they have some cashmere sweaters in their new fall line that would look perfect on you.”

“I don’t want cashmere sweaters, JJ, they’re your style, not mine. I’m stickin’ with what I feel comfortable wearin’, ‘cause unlike you, I’m not tryin’ to impress anyone.”

“Oh, but you don’t know what you’re missing! Cashmere is sooooo soft!”

“I’m allergic; it makes me itch.”

“Poor Dee.” JJ’s blue eyes were filled with sympathy at the tragedy as he headed for his own desk.

“You’re such a liar,” Ryo murmured a short while later as he and Dee headed out to interview a witness.

“What’re ya talkin’ about?”

“You’re not allergic to cashmere, I know that for a fact.”

“Okay, busted. But if I hadn’t told him that, y’know JJ would’a bought me a sweater, and I didn’t want that. What’s wrong with how I dress?”

“Nothing at all.”
