“There’s one thing I’ve never understood about you,” Ryo mused as he and Dee browsed the selection of Halloween costumes, trying to decide what to dress up as this year for the two-seven’s annual Fright Night party.
“Only one?” Dee grinned. “There’s about a thousand things I don’t think I’ll ever understand about you. It’s what makes you so fascinatin’; you’re the eternal, unsolvable mystery.”
Ryo blushed. “Idiot.”
“That too. So what is it?”
“What is what?” Ryo had somehow managed to lose the thread of the conversation.
“What’s this one thing about me you don’t understand?”
“Oh, that. Well, if ghosts… um… bother you so much, why’s Halloween your favourite time of year? I would’ve thought you’d avoid it like the plague, all the spooky monsters, and the spirits of the dead walking the earth.”
“What’s not to love about Halloween? We get to dress up and go around the neighbourhood knockin’ on doors, and people are obliged to hand out free candy. Besides, all the ghosts and monsters wanderin’ around can’t tell if we’re people in costumes or the real deal, so they leave us alone.”
“That… makes a warped kind of sense.”
“I’m smarter than I look!”
