A/N: Triple drabble.
Growing up, Dee couldn’t help wondering about his parents, who they’d been, and why they, or at least his mother, had chosen to abandon him in a filthy alley, naked and alone. He knew the story, or as much as anyone knew, how Jess had been on patrol when he’d heard a sound, how he’d found the baby and taken him to Mother, and how Mother had decided to raise him herself. He knew Mother had expected someone to come for him, but nobody ever had.
“Didn’t they love me?” he’d asked one day, when he was about seven “Is that why they left me?”
“It’s not that simple, dear. I’m sure your mom loved you very much, but she was probably very young and scared, not ready or able to raise a child. I expect she thought you’d have a better life if someone else took care of you.”
Dee had accepted that at the time, thinking he was really a lot better off than some of the kids he knew. He had Mother and Jess; what more did he need?
But now he was an adult he often wondered whether Mother had been right. Was his biological mother unprepared for motherhood, or had he simply been an inconvenience, an unwanted burden, a problem with a simple solution? Perhaps his mom had died in childbirth and his dad, stuck with a helpless new-born, had panicked…
The worst part was that he’d never know. Somewhere out there his parents could still be alive, although probably not together. He could have half-siblings, or other family, aunts and uncles, even grandparents.
Looking at the baby in his arms, his own grandchild, Bikky and Carol’s month-old son, he smiled across at Ryo. It didn’t matter; all the family he needed was right here.
