Quitting smoking was tough. Even with nicotine patches and gum there were times Dee’s willpower wavered, and he wanted so badly to reach for the unopened pack of cigs he kept hidden at the back of his desk drawer. Being a cop was stressful, and smoking had always served to calm him down; chewing a stick of gum wasn’t as satisfying as drawing smoke deep into his lungs.
On the other hand, gum didn’t make his breath and his clothes smell of smoke, and if he’d thought Ryo’s cooking tasted great before, once he quit he realised how much smoking had dulled his sense of taste. Looked like he might have to start watching his weight.
He’d given up his smokes in an effort to lead a healthier life, but piling on the pounds would simply be trading one bad habit for another, so now he not only had to resist the temptation to smoke, he also had to keep from snacking. That meant finding something else to do with his mouth and his hands.
At work the gum had to suffice, either that or chewing his pen, which was another bad habit he’d developed. Every pen he had was now decorated with toothmarks. Outside work there was Ryo, who was a far more pleasurable distraction, a delectable treat for the senses. Dee could lick and nibble on his lover without fear of gaining weight. Ryo also kept his hands and mind occupied, along with other parts.
When Dee realised an entire week had passed without him being tempted to light up, he almost didn’t believe it. He gave it another week, just to be certain he’d beaten the craving.
“I’m officially an ex-smoker,” he told Ryo proudly. “Just don’t ask me to quit you, ‘cause I’d never make it.”
