“Why do we even have to get them a wedding present?” Dee grumbled as he followed Ryo into yet another antique shop.
“Because they’re my friends and we’ve been invited to the wedding. It would look weird if we showed up empty handed.”
“Can’t we just get them a bottle of booze or something? I mean, what do we know about antiques?”
“My parents bought and sold art, including antique pieces. I learned quite a lot from them.”
“Yeah, well I know damn all. Look at this stuff; half of it’s got cracks in it. Why would anyone pay… Whoa! Five grand for an old vase that looks like it was smashed to pieces and then stapled back together?”
“It’s Chinese, and more than seven hundred years old,” Ryo pointed out. “Can you imagine how it would’ve looked when it was new?”
“Yeah, ugly.”
“Dee!”
“Sorry, it’s just not my kinda thing. We can’t afford it anyway, and I’m not sure even the Sea Hag would want it in her home. Rose might, but I always thought he had more money than taste. Speakin’ of which, he’s rich enough to buy anything he wants, and lives in a fully furnished penthouse apartment. Bet he has a house in the Hamptons too. Anything that’s within our budget probably wouldn’t measure up to his standards. Chances are, he’ll just throw it out or give it to one of the servants.”
“Not if it’s personal enough.” Ryo pointed to something in a cabinet. “An antique photo frame, something they can put one of their wedding pictures in. Silver, Art Deco, which I happen to know Diana really likes, and a reasonable price.”
Dee looked at the frame. “Yeah, I guess that’s okay, and it won’t break the bank. D’ya think this place gift-wraps?”
