“We match.” Ryo sounded bemused, and Dee couldn’t blame him. Honestly, some coincidences were downright scary. Some folks claimed people resembled their pets, but did that mean two people who worked together long enough started to resemble each other?
Even granting the possibility they might pick up each other’s habits and gestures, or unconsciously both decide to wear a suit for work on the same day, this kind of coincidence was way out there in the realms of improbability, like a one in a million chance.
Last night, when they’d left work, they’d both been fine; now here they were, arriving at work, both of them sporting black eyes and split lips. They were mirror images of each other since it was Ryo’s left eye and Dee’s right.
“What happened to you?” They even spoke in unison.
“You first,” Dee quickly added.
“Bikky’s been having nightmares, so I let him sleep in my bed last night.”
“Lemme guess; he was flailin’ about and punched ya in the eye?”
“I think it was an elbow.”
“Yeesh, that must’a hurt! Kid’s got seriously bony elbows.”
“It wasn’t fun. In the end I had to pile pillows between us. What about you?”
“Ah, went out with Ted for a beer or two, wound up havin’ to break up a bar fight. Wasn’t my business, until one guy took a swing at his buddy and got me in the eye instead. After that, I kinda made it my business to throw both assholes outta the bar.” Dee grinned, wincing as it pulled at his lip. “Bartender offered me a job as bouncer, but I had to decline, seein’ as I already have a job.”
Passing them, the Chief stopped to stare. “Do I want to know?”
Ryo shrugged. “Just a really weird coincidence, Sir.”
