It was midsummer, and the roof garden was in full bloom. Despite being so high above the city streets, even at this early hour birds were chirruping in the branches of the shrubs and small fruit trees, butterflies were fluttering around the buddleia’s first flowers like pieces of colourful confetti caught on the breeze, and bees were droning lazily among the flowerbeds.

Sitting at the small table set on the decking outside the wide-open French windows, Ianto sipped coffee and munched a slice of toast spread with honey. Judging by the clear blue sky overhead and the warmth of the sun, coming up somewhere behind him, it was going to be a glorious day.

Jack joined him, shoving half a microwave-warmed croissant into his mouth and flopping into the other chair before washing his breakfast down with a gulp from his own coffee mug.

“Wouldn’t hurt you to learn some table manners,” Ianto observed wryly.

“Sorry.” Jack wiped crumbs off his lips with his fingers. “I was hungry.”

“You’re always hungry. You’d enjoy your food more if you took the time to taste it though.”

“I’ll bear that in mind.”

“Good. We don’t want Nosy to learn bad habits. It might choke if it tries to inhale its food the way you do. It’s very impressionable.”

Jack winced. “Right, hadn’t thought of that. I’ll do better, promise.”

“That’s all I ask. We both have to set a good example now we have someone depending on us.”

“Speaking of Nosy, where is it?” Jack scanned what he could see of the roof, searching for the friendly alien.

“Last I saw, it was following a bumblebee round behind the rose bed.”

Standing up, Jack leaned a little to the side to see around a shrub that was blocking his view. “I see it.” He downed the last of his coffee and gestured at Ianto’s mug. “You want a refill?”

“Please.” Ianto picked up his last piece of toast, leaning back in his chair, holding his plate so he wouldn’t shed crumbs on his clothes.

Jack returned a couple of minutes later, a mug in each hand and another croissant between his teeth. Setting the mugs down on the table, he took the croissant out of his mouth and took a modest bite from one end, raising an eyebrow questioningly at Ianto.

“Yes, much better. Now if you could just learn to eat like that all the time…”

They fell into a companionable silence, gazing around at their little piece of paradise, a cottage garden in an urban setting, with roses and honeysuckle, lavender and larkspur, snapdragons, marigolds, foxgloves, and masses of clove-scented pinks. Aubrietia and yellow alyssum tumbled over the edges of beds, while aquilegias nodded gently in the breeze.

“Quite a sight, isn’t it? I didn’t expect it to look this good, not when we only planted it up a few months ago,” Jack admitted.

“Mm.” Ianto smirked, sipping his coffee. “I’d go as far as to say it’s blooming lovely.”
