“What on earth possessed you to buy this thing?” Ryo asked breathlessly as he and Dee paused on the half-landing, still a flight and a half down from Dee’s top floor apartment.
“Didn’t buy it.” Dee straightened up, easing the kinks from his back. “Guy down the street was throwin’ it out and there’s still plenty of use left in it.” Dee patted the massive old dresser. “Good, solid construction. You know my place is kinda lackin’ in the storage department. All this needs is a polish. Reminds me of the furniture back at the orphanage.”
“If you needed more storage space, furniture shops have plenty of dressers available as convenient flat packs. Something like that would’ve fitted in the elevator, saving us having to haul it up four flights of stairs.”
“Modern furniture’s too flimsy, laminated chipboard, lightweight but only lasts a few years before needin’ replaced. This here’s solid oak, made to last. ‘Sides, why pay out good money if ya don’t have to? Aside from the bed, most of the stuff in my apartment I got for free. Amazin’ what people throw out. C’mon, we’re almost at the top.”
That was wishful thinking on Dee’s part; they were just over halfway. Still, they couldn’t leave the massive dresser blocking the stairway.
“Fine, but if I put my back out lugging your new furniture up the stairs, you’re gonna owe me a massage.”
“You can have a massage anytime ya want, babe! All ya gotta do is ask.”
