“Don’t know about you, but I got that Friday night and I just got paid feelin’,” Dee said, grinning at his partner as they clocked off and grabbed their jackets, draping them over their arms because it was too hot out to bother putting them on now their shift was over.

Ryo laughed, shaking his head. “We get paid at the end of the month, which is still a couple weeks away, in case you’ve lost count.”

“Hey, quit killin’ my feelgood vibe; it’s the weekend, and for once we’re not scheduled to work! Feels like we haven’t had a weekend off in forever.”

“We’ve had days off during the week,” Ryo pointed out.

“Well yeah, I know that, but it’s not the same. There’s just somethin’ about a weekend, gettin’ to join the crowds goin’ out and havin’ fun. Everything’s just that bit quieter midweek ‘cause people gotta get up for work in the mornin’.”

“Is that what you want to do tonight, go out and have fun?”

“Depends. Wouldn’t be so much fun on my own, but if you’re up for a night out…” Dee trailed off, giving his partner a hopeful look as they made their way down the stairs.

“I’d have to go home and get changed first, make arrangements for Bikky… I know he’s sixteen, but I still don’t feel right about leaving him by himself all night.”

“Your neighbour will watch him, right?”

“I can ask, or maybe he can go over to Carol’s. I think they have plans tonight anyway.” Ryo pulled out his phone to call his foster son, and by the time he reached his car it was all arranged; Carol would pick Bikky up for their date, and after the movie they’d go back to Carol’s aunt’s place. It was an arrangement both kids were more than happy with.

“So where does that leave us?” Dee asked, leaning against his own car.

“Out on the town, unless you’ve changed your mind.” He’d been tired a little while ago from a long, hot day at work, but now that the heat of the day was beginning to cool to something more bearable, Ryo found he was looking forward to a night out. “Should I grab a bite to eat at home or we going to get something while we’re out?”

“How ‘bout we meet at Lombardi’s? Weather like this, they’ll have some tables outside; if we’re lucky we can snag one and dine alfresco.”

“Sounds good, but are you sure you can afford it?” Ryo grinned teasingly; they generally paid for themselves on dates. “You’re not gonna get paid for a couple weeks yet, and Lombardi’s isn’t the cheapest.”

“Asshole.” Dee grinned back. “What’re we standin’ around here talkin’ for? We gotta go and get ready for our long overdue Friday night out!” Dee pushed away from his car and turned to unlock it.

“Doesn’t have to just be Friday night; we’ve got all weekend.”

“I was hopin’ you’d say that.”
