“What’s that then?” Gwen asked, trying to peer over Ianto’s shoulder at the book he was studying.
Ianto closed it with a snap. Not that Gwen could have read it, since it wasn’t in any language she could understand, but it was the principle. Snooping was rude, and the book had been a personal gift from Jack, for Ianto’s eyes only since he wouldn’t misuse it.
“If you must know, it’s a spell book. Or possibly an alien science textbook; depends on your point of view.
“Oh come on, Ianto, magic isn’t real!”
“That’s open to debate. Haven’t you ever heard the Arthur C. Clarke quote that any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic? A stapler would have been magic to Neanderthals.”
“Yeah, well I’m not a primitive human. I don’t believe in magic, it’s all sleight of...”
Ianto waved one hand in a complicated gesture and suddenly Gwen was floating ten feet off the ground. She drifted over to her workstation where she dropped into her chair.
“How...?”
Smirking, Ianto went back to studying his book. The principles laid out in it were quite eye-opening. Some techniques were proving difficult to master, but the levitation spell was simple.
