“Come take a look at these,” Dee said, swatting Ryo lightly over the head with a bunch of leaflets.
“What are they?” Pouring two mugs of coffee, Ryo followed his lover through into the lounge where there was already a stack of cardboard boxes packed in preparation for the move the following month.
“Paint cards. We’re gonna be livin’ together so it’s only fair you get a say in how the place is decorated.”
Ryo handed Dee his mug and sank down on the sofa, looking puzzled. “I thought you already did the painting.”
“That’s just the undercoat, babe. Still gotta give the walls and ceilings a topcoat.”
“Oh.” Taking a sip of coffee, Ryo set his mug on the end table and reached for the cards. “Are we going to have all the walls the same color?”
“I was thinkin’ we should have a feature wall in each room and paint the rest somethin’ light and neutral.”
“That sounds good. Not Magnolia though, or beige.”
Dee laughed. “Yeah, there’s such a thing as TOO neutral. How ‘bout somethin’ like this?” Dee pointed out a creamy buttermilk shade that was warm yet subtle.
“I like that. It’s not too pale but the colour isn’t too obvious either.”
“That’s what I was thinkin’. I figured Biks would like red in his room, bein’ a Bulls fan. Maybe paint the door red too, and the surrounds in black.”
“You’re sweet. He’d love that.” Ryo leaned over to press a kiss to Dee’s cheek.
“Yeah, just don’t tell the brat it was my idea. How ‘bout our room?”
It took them a while, flipping through the various charts, but they finally settled on a rich purple for their bedroom, and something called peacock blue for the living room. The black furniture would stand out well against it.
“We can pick up paints and rollers after work tomorrow, if you’re not busy. The sooner we get started the better; it’ll need time to dry before we put everything where we want it.”
Ryo nodded. “Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For wanting my opinion.”
“Always, babe.”
