Sitting on short, dry grass, Dee gazed out at the rolling hills dipping towards distant fenced-in farmland where cows the size of toys grazed alongside narrow roads, empty except for the occasional tiny car.
“Wonder why they’re called the Downs,” he mused, twirling a blade of grass between his fingers.
“Because they go down?” Ryo suggested from where he was sprawled on his back beside his lover, eyes half-closed as he watched a skylark high overhead, a dark dot against the blue of the sky.
“From what I’ve seen so far, they mostly go up,” Dee disagreed. That was why they were sitting here, catching their breath after a long trek up a steep footpath to reach the top of England’s South Downs.
“I suppose it depends which direction you’re coming from.”
Dee turned to stare incredulously at his lover before realising Ryo was joking.
“Ass!”
Ryo propped himself up on his elbows, grinning. “Might not be such a steep climb coming from the other end though.”
“Maybe. Not gonna find out sittin’ here all day though. Still got a few more ups and downs between us and the village.” Dee stood, brushing grass off his pants. “Let’s get rollin’.”
