Jack had decided that maybe they should have a base of operations, somewhere they could retreat to away from the universe’s problems in order to recharge their batteries. Just because they were immortal didn’t mean they were inexhaustible. Even their TARDIS could do with occasional downtime.
It was fine if the Doctor wanted to keep moving constantly, never looking back at where he’d been, but while he had reasons for living that way, Jack and Ianto didn’t share them. They were more than happy to lend assistance when needed, but they’d been permanently on call when they worked for Torchwood. They’d more than earned the chance to live their lives at their own pace.
With the help of their TARDIS, they’d located a remote little uninhabited planet in the forty-second century, earth time, and picked out an island just on the outer edge of the tropics, where the weather would be pleasant but not too hot. There, they’d built themselves a large, rambling, ranch-style house from a kit they’d bought on twenty-seventh century earth.
Actually, saying they built it was a touch misleading since they’d had to do very little themselves. Just pick a spot, sink the corner posts into the ground a suitable distance apart, and their house more or less built itself, adapting to the terrain so it fitted in perfectly.
They could have bought self-building furniture packs as well but instead decided to roam time and space choosing their own furnishings, since the contents of the packs were rather unimaginative. It took them quite a while, but by the time they were finished their home was decorated in a unique mix of earth antiques and more modern pieces that suited their personalities.
A picturesque bay spread out less than a quarter of a mile from their wide front porch, where they could swim, chase each other up and down the beach, play with their dogs, or make love on a blanket in the shade of the palm trees. Behind the house were fenced-in pastures and a barn, where they kept horses and ponies, including several winged unicorns.
At approximately fifteen earth miles long and nine wide, the island provided ample room for adventure and exploration, and the big house with its six bedrooms meant that accommodating visitors was never a problem. Sometimes the TARDIS would disguise herself as an antique cabinet to stay with them indoors, but she mostly preferred to be a tree, providing shade at one corner of the nearest pasture.
“Our home from home,” Jack said happily as they stepped out of their TARDIS on their island after their latest trip. “It’s good to be back.”
“It is,” Ianto agreed, leaning on the wooden fence surrounding the pasture, smiling as their horses trotted to greet them. They’d been gone almost six months, but only a day had passed here. “Shall we go for a ride before dinner?”
“Why not? A gallop over the hills will clear our heads.”
Their life couldn’t be more perfect.
