The Great Grey Owl slowly swivelled her head, blinking bright yellow eyes. She was huge, over two feet from the top of her head to the tips of her tail feathers, and Ryo was completely captivated.

“Isn’t she amazing, Dee?”

Dee was staying well out of reach, wary of the sharp beak and powerful talons.

“I wouldn’t want to be on the wrong end of those claws, that’s for sure. How can ya do that?”

The owl was perched on Ryo’s hand, which was encased in a leather gauntlet, her weight so much less than he would have expected from her size.

“She’s tame. If it wasn’t safe, people wouldn’t be allowed to hold them,” Ryo replied, without taking his eyes off the bird. He’d never been this close to an owl of any kind, and he wanted to make the most of the opportunity, studying her plumage, her eyes, the way the shape of her face made her look permanently surprised.

When he’d seen the display by a local raptor rescue center, Ryo hadn’t been able to resist the temptation of taking a closer look, dragging Dee along with him. There were a number of birds of prey, hawks as well as owls, perched on stumps inside a temporary enclosure so people could take pictures and, for a modest donation to the center, hold one of the birds. Ryo had immediately handed his camera to Dee and dug out his wallet; there was no way he was passing up the chance to hold an owl!

Dee had called him nuts. “Look at the beaks on those things!”

“You don’t have to hold one if you don’t want to, but I’m going to.” He’d paid, and when his turn came, he’d chosen the majestic Great Grey.

“You just had to pick the biggest one, didn’t you?” Dee eyed the enormous owl. “You couldn’t just go for the little one.”

Ryo smiled, keeping his voice low and calm. “I wanted to get a sense of how much lighter birds are for their size. She probably weighs less than three pounds.”

“Crazy.” Raising the camera, Dee took a few more photos. “Just be careful it doesn’t fly off and take you with it.”

“She’d never get me off the ground.”

A little reluctantly, Ryo handed the owl back to her keeper and removed the gauntlet. This was an experience he’d never forget.
