When Arnon was killed, so suddenly and so senselessly, something in Dee had shattered. Only hours earlier, he and his friends had been hanging out, the same way they always had, and then just like that, their little gang of four had been reduced to three.
It had come as a shock. They were just teenagers, too young to have any sense of their own mortality, sure they were going to live forever, but Arnon’s murder had given the lie to that certainty. Something had shifted, as if the ground beneath their feet had tilted, the very foundations of their existence rocked as they’d been forced to accept that their lives too could be ended as abruptly and irrevocably as Arnon’s had.
Shaken to the core, they’d started to re-evaluate everything they’d thought they knew, but before they could find their balance again, Jess was murdered too.
All of Dee’s little gang had known Jess, but Dee had been the closest to him. In every way that mattered, Jess had been Dee’s dad, dispenser of pocket money and advice, a firm hand that had tried to keep a young orphan on the straight and narrow.
Being there when it happened, seeing the life go out of Jess’s eyes, was worse than seeing Arnon already dead. It was a fist shoved brutally into the cracks of his already broken heart, forcing them wider, threatening to tear him apart, but then… Something had changed. Perhaps it was Jess’s last words, exhorting Dee to be a better man than he’d been.
The cracks in Dee’s heart hadn’t miraculously healed, and probably never would, but a sense of purpose had filled him, keeping his shattered heart in one piece.
He couldn’t bring his friends back, but he could help to save others like them.
