A/N: Double drabble.
Ryo stood outside the baker’s and drew in a deep breath, savoring the aroma of fresh bread, just out of the oven; there was nothing better. Forget the stodgy sliced loaves most people bought these days for convenience; they couldn’t be considered real bread, packed with preservatives as they were. Real bread was freshly baked and crusty. It required a breadboard and breadknife to cut generous slices, spread with thick, creamy butter…
“Hey! Earth to Ryo! You gonna stand there all day?”
“Huh?” Ryo tore himself from his reverie.
“Work to do,” Dee reminded him. “Crime scene to visit, witness statements to collect, victims to interview. Remember?” Dee had been halfway down the block before realising he’d lost his partner, turning to see him stopped dead on the sidewalk some ten yards away. When calling Ryo’s name had failed to get a response, Dee had retraced his steps.
“Right, yes, sorry.” Ryo threw one final, regretful glance towards the baker’s, took a last breath of the bread-scented air, and sighed. “Fresh bread just smells so good.”
Ten minutes later they were on their way again, munching warm, crusty rolls straight from the oven.
“You’re right,” Dee agreed. “This is amazin’!”
