“Life isn’t fair.”
Ryo remembered his dad saying that to him once when he was a kid, upset because he hadn’t been invited to a classmate’s birthday party.
“It’s alright to want things, as long as you understand you’re not always going to get the things you want,” his mom had explained later. “No one ever gets everything they want.”
“Not even you and dad?”
“Not even us. There were so many things I wanted when I was your age, and I didn’t get even half of them. But now I’m grown up with a family of my own, I know most of the things I wanted were things I didn’t need, and I didn’t suffer for not having them. They weren’t important.”
Ryo had tried to understand, but he’d only been seven or eight at the time. Still, he hadn’t forgotten his parents’ words of wisdom, and had tried not to want so many things, to think about everything he believed he wanted and try to figure out if they were things he really needed. Maybe if he only asked for things that really mattered to him, he’d be luckier in what he got.
But this was different. This REALLY wasn’t fair! He didn’t care if he sounded childish; so what if he was eighteen and practically an adult? Someone had murdered his parents, had snatched them from him without him even having the chance to tell them how much he loved them and to say goodbye.
He wanted them back because he still needed them. He wasn’t ready to be alone, cut loose from the safety and security of his home and family. There was still so much he didn’t know.
He wished he could wake and find it was just a bad dream, but…
Life wasn’t fair.
