People weren’t perfect, not even the best of them; that was something Mother had told Dee since he was a small boy, practically every time he’d got in trouble and then felt guilty over not living up to her expectations. Everybody made mistakes, did the wrong thing now and then, had bad thoughts sometimes, or said things they didn’t mean, especially in moments of anger, but that didn’t make them bad.

Nobody could be perfect because perfection wasn’t a human thing. All that could be expected of anyone was for them to be the best person they could be, despite all their faults and failings. But of course, one should always apologise for doing, saying, or thinking anything bad, however inadvertently, and apologies should always be sincere.

Dee had taken it all to heart, especially as he approached adulthood and decided he wanted to be a cop. He’d made his share of mistakes, both as a kid and as a teenager, and as he’d prepared to enter the police academy, he’d tried hard to be the best possible version of himself.

He wasn’t perfect, could never hope for that, but he didn’t need to be, as long as he tried.

The End
