It was only three days, not a long time to be apart from Ryo, but for Dee it felt like forever. It wasn’t even that they’d never been apart for that long, or for longer periods, because they had on many occasions, both before they’d become lovers, and since then. Sometimes they were scheduled for different shifts, or one of them might be off sick, or they had two or three days off but were both busy with other things.
This was different though, because Ryo wasn’t at home, or nearby; he was a good two hours’ drive away. Dee couldn’t drop in for a visit, or even phone his lover, since Ryo had told him that phone reception at the campsite Bikky’s school generally used was unpredictable at best. Dee had tried sending a few texts, but there’d been no reply, so he had no idea if his lover had received them. Maybe Ryo didn’t even have his phone turned on. It was a parent and child camping trip, after all; Ryo was doubtlessly focussing on his foster son, and Dee knew he shouldn’t feel jealous of Bikky, Ryo had to put the boy first, but it still sucked.
Dee was thankful he was working through the weekend, that at least gave him company and something to do with his time during the day, but after work the evenings stretched out before him, bleak and empty. Knowing he had hours to kill before he could turn in and hopefully dream of the man he loved, he was tempted to volunteer for overtime, but with his luck, he wouldn’t get scheduled for extra hours until Ryo was home again, which would only lead to more time apart. It wasn’t worth the risk.
Going for a couple of beers with the guys after work killed an hour or two, and the first night he’d considered eating out, but that would have meant sitting at a table alone, which wouldn’t have been any better than having a solitary meal at home. In the end he’d picked up takeout instead; at least that way he didn’t have to endure the pitying looks from other diners who might think he’d been stood up.
The second day was the same as the first. He woke up in bed alone, went to work, clocked off at the end of shift, had a couple of beers at McGinty’s, then trailed his lonely way back home, picking up a curry on the way. He spent the evening watching sports on TV, but mostly wondering what Ryo was doing, and if he was having fun.
‘Bet I haven’t crossed his mind at all,’ he thought gloomily. ‘He’s probably too busy singin’ songs around the campfire, toastin’ marshmallows, tellin’ stories, givin’ the kids the benefit of his campin’ experience.’
Somehow that thought made Dee feel even more depressed and lonely. He wished he was there too, joining in the fun, and he didn’t even like camping all that much.
Day three dawned annoying bright and sunny. Dee wondered if the weather was as good at the campsite, and then felt guilty for hoping it might be raining so the camping trip would be cut short. Ryo and Bikky would be home the following day, he’d be reunited with his lover in a little over twenty-four hours. He’d already survived two days alone; he could get through one more.
It was a Sunday though, and it dragged even more than the previous two days had. Worse, he was scheduled to have Monday off, so when he finally punched the clock, there was nowhere he needed to be until second shift on Tuesday. On the plus side, Ryo should be back somewhere around lunchtime, so maybe Dee could kill time by sleeping late. That would be a better use of his time than sitting there waiting for his phone to ring.
As it turned out, the phone call never came. Instead, there was a knock on the door and Dee opened it to find his lover standing in the hallway, smiling.
“I’m back!”
That was all Ryo got the chance to say before Dee pulled him inside, slammed the door, and was wrapped around his lover like a clinging vine before Ryo could blink.
“I’ve missed you,” Dee mumbled against Ryo’s neck. “REALLY missed you, like every second of every day.”
“I missed you too.” Ryo’s arms wrapped around Dee. “Phone reception was non-existent, otherwise I would have called you, just to hear your voice.”
“I texted you.”
“I know, I found that out when we got back and I checked my phone. I dropped Bikky at Carol’s and came straight here.”
Dee pulled back. “Didn’t mean to worry you.”
“I wasn’t worried, just wanted to see you. The camping trip was fun, Bikky and I had a good time, but I couldn’t help wishing you were there.”
“I wished that too, but I would’a been in the way, takin’ your attention away from the house ape. I’m just happy you came back to me.”
“I promised I would.”
“Yeah, you did, and you always keep your promises.”
