“I’ve been dreamin’ about this for weeks!” Dee sighed, digging his bare toes into sand that was almost hot.
“I’m not entirely convinced I’m not still dreaming,” Ryo admitted, taking in the wide expanse of beach, and the ocean lapping gently against the shore.
Just a few short hours earlier they’d boarded a plane and left the snow-clad streets and buildings of New York far behind. Where they were vacationing in Florida was only a thousand or so miles from their home, but it might as well have been another world. Palm trees, blue skies, and a balmy breeze instead of snow, ice, and the kind of wind that cuts through winter clothing like a knife.
“Heaven on earth!” Dee threw a giddy grin in his lover’s direction. While he would have liked to spend the next two weeks on a tropical island, that had been outside their budget this year, but Florida was a perfectly acceptable substitute. “C’mon, let’s go stake out a patch of sand for ourselves and get down to enjoyin’ the sunshine!”
“In a minute. First, I want an ice cream,” Ryo said firmly.
“Seriously? We come all this way to escape the freezin’ weather, and now you wanna make yourself cold by eatin’ ice cream?”
“It’s part of the beach experience,” Ryo explained. “Sun, sand, sea, and ice cream.”
“Okay, doofus, we’ll get you your ice cream, but then we’re gonna sun ourselves on the beach, maybe go for a swim later if we get too hot.”
Ryo nodded. “Sounds fair. Sure you don’t want one too? Or maybe a cold drink?”
“Maybe later. Right now, I just wanna roast myself in the sunshine until I don’t even remember anymore what it feels like to be cold. We should take a winter vacation every year!”
