Late last night, arriving home, the streets and parked cars had been glittering with frost, tiny grains of ice sparkling like diamond dust beneath the streetlamps. The overnight forecast had been for light rain showers, which would have probably led to black ice on the roads come morning, something Dee hadn’t been enthused about. The meteorologists had gotten it wrong again though, not that Dee was particularly surprised. In his experience, forecasting the weather was a bit hit and miss, mostly miss; you could never be a hundred percent sure what weather you’d get until you got it.
This morning, looking from his bedroom window at the street below, snow covered everything in a thick, white blanket that had to be almost a foot deep. It must have been coming down hard most of the night, and the sight of it left him a bit torn. Part of him wished he was still tucked up beneath the blankets on his own bed, with no need or desire to move from the warm and cosy nest they made, and yet he was still young enough for the pristine whiteness to pull at him with the promise of carefree fun. To be the first person to leave footprints in that unbroken expanse of fresh snow… Then again, it would be freezing, which was considerably less enticing.
Well, he’d just have to wrap up against the cold since he had to go out in it anyway; he was working today, and nobody had invented teleportation yet. Besides, going to work meant spending the day with his lover, so that was an added incentive… Picking up his personal phone from the nightstand, he pressed speed dial. Ryo picked up on the fourth ring.
“’Lo?” His voice was fuzzy with sleep.
“Hey, did I wake ya? Thought you’d be up by now.”
“Uh…” There were rustling sounds, then Ryo’s voice again. “Alarm would’a gone off in a couple of minutes anyway. What’s up?” He sounded more awake now.
“Nothin’. Was just callin’ to ask if you’d seen the snow yet.”
“Snow? No.” More rustling sounds as Ryo extracted himself from the cosy cocoon of his own blankets, then… “Hey, it’s been snowing! That wasn’t forecast, was it?”
Dee laughed. “No, but how often do we get what’s forecast anyway?”
“That’s true, and from the way the sky looks, we’ll probably be getting more soon.”
“Wouldn’t surprise me. Can’t decide whether I wanna go back to bed or go out in the snow, maybe start a snowball fight or somethin’.”
“You’re not gonna call in sick, are you?”
“’Course not, I’m not gonna abandon ya on a day like this, but I’m not gonna bother diggin’ my car out. I’ll probably take the subway.”
“Yeah, that sounds sensible; think I’ll most likely do the same. Subway or bus, if the buses are even running.”
Dee could imagine his lover leaning on the windowsill beside his bed, peering down into the street, trying to make out which of the white mounds was his car. He sort of wished he was there to pounce on his baby and drag him back down among the covers…
Ryo’s voice broke through his daydream. “Dee? You still there?”
“Where else would I be?”
“I was just thinking; if the weather’s going to be like this for a while, maybe you should stay here for a few days. The commute would be shorter, and we could carpool once Bikky’s dug my car out and the streets have been gritted.”
“You’re gonna make the House Ape dig your car out?” Dee didn’t bother trying to hide his amusement at the thought.
“He’ll want to build a snowman anyway, so he may as well use the snow off my car. Besides, I’ll pay him.”
“Sneaky! And yeah, you know I’m not gonna say no to stayin’ at yours for a while. I’ll pack a bag and bring it to the precinct with me. See ya at work?”
“Unless I get buried in a snowdrift on my way in.” Ryo’s alarm clock chose that moment to go off and he sighed. “Guess that means it’s time for me to get up.”
“’Kay, I’ll let ya go get ready to face the day. Suppose I should do the same. Catch ya later!” Dee hung up and grabbed his sports bag from his closet, tossing a few changes of clothes into it; he’d add razor and toothbrush once he was done with them.
It might not have been forecast, but Dee was glad it had snowed. For the next few nights, he and Ryo could snuggle up beneath the blankets together and keep each other warm. Sometimes bad weather could be a good thing.
