A pang of guilt went through Dee at the sight of children staring wide-eyed at two armed men chasing Santa through the streets. Their parents were going to have some explaining to do if they were to have any hope of maintaining their kids’ sense of Christmas wonder.

It couldn’t be helped though; it wasn’t as if he and Ryo could stop and explain it wasn’t really Santa they were chasing, but a bad guy dressed to look like the jolly fat man so he could do bad things. That would probably make it worse, leaving a bunch of kids afraid of Santa, although that boat had already sailed, back at the department store where Peter Wilkens, known pedophile, had gotten employed by disguising himself with a full while beard and using fake ID. How many of the kids who’d sat on his knee today would ever trust another Santa?

Wilkens wouldn’t get away with this, not if Dee and his partner had any say in the matter.

It took more to make Ryo angry than it did Dee, but once the fuse was lit, he burned twice as hot. He lunged forward in a flying tackle, slamming into the fugitive, and taking him down hard. By the time Dee caught up, after having to detour around a group of curious onlookers, his partner already had Wilkens cuffed and was reading him his rights.

Dee reached down, ripping off the hat and fake hair, followed by the beard, before helping Ryo haul their captive to his feet. This time, going back the way they’d come with Wilkens unmasked, Dee felt a sense of satisfaction. The children they’d passed a few minutes earlier would see this guy was an impostor, and that the cops had caught him; that should make it easier for the parents to explain. Naughty men who pretended to be Santa got punished. Only the real Santa and his troops were allowed to wear the red and white.

Just to make things clearer, Dee stopped beside a sidewalk Santa collecting for charity, shook his hand, and dropped money in his collection tin.

“Keep up the good work.”

“Thank you kindly, and a Merry Christmas to you!” Santa boomed.

Several passers-by applauded, but the icing on the cake was a small girl who stepped forward and kicked Wilkens in the shin.

“You’re not Santa!”

Truer words were never spoken.
